Toni Darder Alorda, the wine grower
The family of Toni Darder Alorda has been growing wine for many years on Majorca. In the 1980s,
the father of Toni Darder Alorda rediscovered the Malvasia vine, began to grow it again and to
produce wine from it. However, many of the plants became diseased and to cultivate them successfully
was a piece of very hard work. In the 1990s, the family attempted - together with the university of
the Balearic islands - to perform an in-vitro wine plants cultivation. Since 1999, healthy Malvasia-plants
have been grown on Majorca and the sales have been increasing constantly. Meanwhile, Toni Darder Alorda
started his own Bodega in Banyalbufar. About 95 per cent of his wine is sold locally, but he also disposes
his products to German, English and Spanish tourists. Moreover, he exports a small percentage to Germany.
In contrast to German wine, the Malvasia wine has an alcohol content of 14 per cent.
