The new old lords

Ulrichshusen manor is both an attractive tourist sight and the musical centre of the annual festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is thanks to Helmut Baron of Maltzahn that Ulrichshusen castle has regained beauty and significance.

In 1993, together with his wife, Alla baroness of Maltzahn, Helmut of Maltzahn bought the manor intending to restore Ulrichshusen castle. In cooperation with the regional authority for the preservation of monuments in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the German Foundation for Monument Protection and the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (the German Foundation for the preservation of nature and environment) the restoration had already begun that year.

Years of restoration works and the energetic help of the people of Penzlin transformed the Maltzahn´s vision into reality: The castle that had burned down to the ground only some years before became a beauty spot again, a cultural stronghold including a hotel and gardens right in the heart of the Mecklenburg lake district. In addition to that Ulrichshusen is the major venue of the festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, since 1994. Famous musicians such as Anne-Sophie Mutter, Igor Oistroch or Yehudi Menuhin have played in the Ulrichshusen concert hall - which had once been a barn.
